Fabric 101: How Sustainable is the Eucalyptus Fabric?

Did you know that the beautiful eucalyptus tree is not just for feeding those cute koalas and for use as medicine? As technology and innovation continues to develop over the years, eucalyptus has been one of the best choices if you want a breathable, soft and luxurious fabric.

Aside from its soothing and cooling properties, eucalyptus fabric is sustainable and a great alternative to cotton and bamboo. But many question its overall sustainability when it comes to its impact on the environment, people and pets.

Why should eucalyptus be considered the best sustainable fabric in the world. In this article, we will discuss how eucalyptus fabrics impact our environment, our animals and ourselves.

What is Lyocell?

Fabrics made from eucalyptus are typically made using lyocell fabric, generally known as Tencel. Tencel is the brand name of this fantastic eucalyptus fabric (lyocell) made and manufactured by Lenzing, an Austria-based company.

So this is how they do it: eucalyptus wood is gathered, chopped into smaller pieces and then ground into a pulp. Once grounded, it will then be dissolved using a solvent solution called "amine oxide."

This results in a liquid state that is pressed through spinnerets, generating the lyocell fibres. They are cleaned and dried before being spun into yarn and finally woven into eucalyptus lyocell fabric.

How Green is the Eucalyptus Fabric?

Just by looking and touching, you will be able to tell that it is an environmentally-friendly fabric. However, here's the low-down on why it's among one of the top choices for sustainable beddings.

Instead of uprooting, eucalyptus trees are felled. This means that the manufacturers don't need to replace and plant new trees continuously. They are also quick to grow, and the best part, they don't need irrigation or pesticides and can quickly grow even on dry and rocky soil.

Another reason why eucalyptus stands out from conventional cotton is that it conserves 99% of water when manufactured. It's called the closed-loop system, wherein 99% of water can be reused. Plus, the solvent solution is 100% non-toxic.

Also! When eucalyptus fabric is manufactured, it uses 50% less water than cotton. That's way less! Plus, to cap it off, since this fabric doesn't release harmful microfibres, it's 100% biodegradable and recyclable.

What About its Impact on Animals and Humans?

Eucalyptus is unquestionably harmless to people and animals. For one thing, you can consider it as a vegan fabric as long as it's not used with silk or wool and any animal produced fibres. And since it was manufactured from sustainable forestry, whose ecosystem can continue to thrive, no harm will be done to any animals.

For humans, the best thing about the eucalyptus fabric is that it doesn't pollute our environment from manufacturing to disposal. As mentioned above, it's 100% biodegradable and made from non-toxic materials.

Another concern people have is if it's labour-intensive. The answer is no. The way it's made is mostly lab-based, meaning less human resources compared to other fabrics.
